Estimates vary, but one estimate purports that over 30,000 people experience homelessness in Maryland each year. Although Maryland is one of the nation’s wealthiest states, over 50% of impoverished Marylanders live in “deep poverty”, meaning that their annual income is less than half of the federally defined poverty level, driving homelessness.
The 2023 Point-in-Time (PIT) count, conducted in January 2023, shows a 12% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness from 2022 to 2023, thoursands more people. The problem is not going away.
